Explanation
This formula treats dysmenorrhoea deriving from Blood deficiency and Kidney-Yang; two patterns which
often occur simultaneously in women. This happens because the uterus stores blood but is also connected to
the kidney so that there is often an overlap between blood deficiency and a kidney deficiency.
Dysmenorrhoea occurring against a background of deficiency is characterized by dull rather than severe pain.
Although this pattern is a deficient one, there is always some stagnation of Qi and stasis of blood as, when Qi
and blood are deficient for a long time they fail to move properly and stagnation results.
