Classical antecedent: Chai Hu Shu Gan Tang (Bupleurum Soothing the Liver Decoction)
Indications:
Epigastric or abdominal distension and pain occurring against a background of emotional stress, flatulence, belching, irritability, depression.
Indications in Chinese Medicine:
Pattern: Liver-Qi stagnant primarily, with secondary deficiency of Spleen-Qi and Stomach-Qi (stagnant Liver-Qi invading the Spleen and Stomach).
Actions: Regulate Qi, eliminate stagnation, pacify the Liver, stop pain.
Tongue: Could be almost normal or slightly red on the sides.
Pulse: Wiry.
